Title: My college teacher is a Saxophone player
Description: Will this hinder me in anyway?

I just remembed from the college interview that the guy who will be teaching me is a saxophone player and was wondering if this will affect what i can learn from him as a guitar player?

Yeah, it probably will...I can only see it as a positive thing though. Remember, Allan Holdsworth is a huge fan of the sax and has strove to emulate that instrument on the guitar. Not to mention he's one of the most technically proficient guitarists alive.

Also, my induction is on September third and i am wondering what i actually do on an induction?

The letter i recieved gives almost no information other than it will last about 3 hours and that i should take my GCSE results. Anyone know if i should take my mighty axe with me or if i have lessons that day?

My freind says he thinks it's just giving your personal info and that one of my parents should be there etc but isn't 100% sure.

I'd just take yourself and your certificates. You'll just be going through the admin process.

Regarding the Sax playing tutor - If he is good at his job I believe it will be a great opportunity for you to expand as a musicain and not just as a guitarist. Sounds great to me!

I know of a good few guitarists over the years, Ritchie Blackmore included, who said they listened to Sax players for ideas on phrasing etc.

On the induction thing, that will just be a formal introduction to the course and it will explain what is contained in it. You may well be given the chance to ask any questions you have concerning it as well plus you'll be able to introduce yourself to your fellow classmates.

I just realized that the teacher may very well suck... He said something about what is taught on the course and he said that We will teach you the scales like Harmonic Minor (Which i already know) and Melodic Minor but noone ever uses them. Straight away i know that this is BS... He even went so far as to say that the only scale that ever gets used a lot is the major scale.

Well he's got a point...for most ppl that is indeed true. Major/Minor is all you need to play quite a lot of music out there. Not saying I agree completely with what he said, but that's probably where he's coming from.

Part of his talk to me was basically about how life sucks in the music industry because you just end up a session player and become depressed he said his freind Frank Gambale feels very much like this. I'm calling BS on that though lol. Specifically the part about him knowing Frank Gambale.

The second guitar teacher i had went to the same college with the same teacher and told me he tends to make up stories about him knowing people etc :P

Hopefully when he refers to the major scale he's not only talking about it but the modes contained within it as well.

Ah ok, he sounds like one of those frustrated-musician-teachers who pass along their frustrations to their students. I've known a few...

Went for the induction today (I beleive i posted about this somewhere asking what it was) and it was basicaly just queing up for various things for about 3 hours...

I then got showed the music rooms and they had some cool stuff. They had a Marshall JCM2000, a Vox amp though i couldn't figure out what model and another amp i didn't get a good look at :P

The master mixing board work station thing they have was apparently once used to record a Depeche Mode album... this would be cool if i liked Depeche Mode lol.

Anyway... queing up for stuff for 3 hours is certainly not fun...
