Title: Who would you like to play like?
Hurricane Kid - May 30, 2009 10:05 AM (GMT)
Bit of a stupid thread I know, but if there was one guitarists skills and style that you could magically attain, who would it be and why? I know as guitarist we are supposed to strive for our own voice on the instrument, but putting that aside who would it be?
I personally would love Vinnie Moore's chops and style because of his ultra clean playing and mixture of neoclassical with some cool bluesy stuff and the odd nod to jazz.
IbanezDaemon - May 30, 2009 10:31 AM (GMT)
Vinnie Moore or Paul Gilbert for me. My 2 Fave players. It's never gonna happen though!! ;)
Steve5513 - May 30, 2009 02:32 PM (GMT)
In terms of whose technique i want i would have to say Paul Gilbert but in terms of who i would want to sound like with the music i create it would be Jason Becker.

Hmm.. interesting Steve. Does this suggest that you think Mr Gilbert is a more technically advanced player than Becker? I'm not sure who I think is the best technically. I suppose PG may sound more technical in some ways but maybe that is because he relies very heavily on sequenced stuff. I dunno....
Acousolysis - May 31, 2009 06:56 PM (GMT)
Guthrie Govan.
All respect to Jason Becker, too, but I find the fusion element quite breath-taking.

Yngiwe Malmsteen! wow i might sound like a noob, but he is my favorite.
Either that or my second favorite guitarist Randy Rhoads! Or George Lynch!
Combine all those together, and wow, i wouldnt be able to play a titianium guitar without melting it :D
DatM - June 1, 2009 12:08 AM (GMT)
I would have to go with Allan Holdsworth. Simply put, everytime I hear him play I think "Damn, I wish could play like that." But its so over my head...
PerpetualBurn - June 1, 2009 01:58 AM (GMT)
Hmm...Satch for me. Not because of his amazing legato technique, but the way he writes music and his phrasing of notes...that's what I want.

Some great choices. I like early Tony MacAlpine as well. Maximum Security sound was awesome. Maybe it was more the songs than the actual tone and speed though.

Ah yes - Mr Scary. He would be second on my list. He really has got his own individual style. To me Lynch is the quintessential metal guitarist.

I always thought Gilbert sounded more technically advanced but you saying that has got me thinking otherwise.

I'm quite sure Becker was the more technically advanced player at the top of his career. I don't think Becker ever put all he could into a single song, he would always maintain melody and flow over virtuosity.
IbanezDaemon - June 1, 2009 03:40 PM (GMT)
Gilbert vs Becker? GILBERT!!! ;)
Steve5513 - June 1, 2009 05:18 PM (GMT)
Personally, i much prefer Beckers music and style. My second choice on who i would like to play as would be Tony Macalpine from the Maximum Security era when he was more Neo-Classical than he is now.

I fully agree with ID on this one.
Hurricane Kid - June 2, 2009 10:08 AM (GMT)
I have to say that when I think about it I think Gilbert is the cleaner guitar player - I can't remember him playing anything that wasn't super accurate.
acdc51502112 - June 2, 2009 07:19 PM (GMT)
I'd have to say Vinnie and Shawn Lane, and maybe Chris from scale the summit
Muramasa - June 4, 2009 02:50 AM (GMT)
If I could play like Paco de Lucía I wouldn't need a band and I could play without plugging a guitar, but that are not the reasons...
SHREDDERS BETTER - June 10, 2009 06:23 PM (GMT)
Hum,man thats tough. Can't pick just one so here goes.
#1 JERRY CANTRELL-the coolest expressions and fills
#2 FRANK MARINO-pentatonic at the speed of light
#3 JEFF BECK-just a guitar genius
Thier are many more but this is what i practice
Lektro - June 10, 2009 06:54 PM (GMT)
The combined style and skill of at least two and a half Jonas Brothers.
MandolinShredder - June 19, 2009 11:09 PM (GMT)
I don't really know who I would want to play like 'style-wise', but man, it would be awesome to have the articulation of Paco de Lucia's right hand!
That finger control? Whew...
Electric Jake - August 26, 2009 07:38 AM (GMT)
great topic! so if I woke up tomorrow with super guitar powers, I would want to be Mike Denner from Mercyful Fate. I think his phrasing is brilliant. just listen to The Oath, you know?
IbanezDaemon - August 26, 2009 09:26 AM (GMT)
Ah! I used to have that Mercyful Fate album. Must hunt out a copy of it.

I would love to play Marty Friedman.
He does some great melodic stuff and I'm more of a melody guy put together with speed.
hvacfreak - September 3, 2009 12:40 AM (GMT)
My dream would be to have the musical knowledge of Jeff Berlin along with the flash and tone of the mid - 1980's Billy Sheehan . Throw in a hint of Jack Bruce to keep me grounded.
Benzo - September 3, 2009 05:17 AM (GMT)
Either Shawn Lane or Jason Becker. Both with some of the most technically advanced playing in history with some of the most soulful playing you will ever hear. In my opinion Lane's covers of Hendrix songs were even better than those of SRV, sadly all 3 guitarists are no longer with us. And Jason is unable to play :( It's always the bad things that happens to the best players.
Daniel962 - July 26, 2010 09:57 PM (GMT)
Marty Friedman,T-Mac,Vinnie moore and Jason Becker combined.I'm greedy
ImitationSHREDder - July 27, 2010 04:08 AM (GMT)
Jason Becker and Paul Gilbert. No one else matters because thats everything right there.
Orzandotl - July 28, 2010 01:23 AM (GMT)
neoshredder - July 28, 2010 02:07 AM (GMT)
80's Vinnie Moore, 80's Tony MacAlpine, or 80's George Lynch.
ELEPHIN0 - August 27, 2010 08:05 AM (GMT)
Okay, i'm gonna go all out on this! I'd have:
Jason Becker or Takayoshi Ohmura's technique.
Joe Satriani's knowledge of music theory.
Jeff Beck's impovising skills.
Gary Moore's balls (in his metal days).
Mike Oldfield's sense of grandness.
And...
Even though he isn't a guitarist; John William's sense of melody!
Then i think i'd be pretty good!
