So, I know a little bit about symphonic metal, I have heard the music (nothing to die for), I realize it contains some classical elements, but I'm not exactly sure what elements of classical or what symphonic elements are actually incorporated into the music. I want to know how exactly does symphonic metal differ from neo-classical. Specifics! discuss!

I believe Symphonic means Symphony. Instruments involved in a symphony while Neo-Classical is more of using ideas in classical music in a rock setting. Sometimes they use symphonic instruments as well but more the theory behind it.

In my opinion, NeoClassical is stuff like Yngwie Malmsteen, Concerto Moon, and some parts of Stratovarius. Whilst Symphonic Metal is more kinda Nightwish, Fairyland, Rhapsody (although Rhapsody also has Neo-classical guitar in parts) kinda stuff.

Its a bit of a grey area at times I think.

so do you guys think dream theater playing with a small orchestra count as symphonic metal more so than when Yngwie did? (screw metallica S&M sucked)
