Title: Show your rig!

Devon8822 - March 20, 2008 04:46 PM (GMT)
This is where people can post pics of their rigs, and talk about them. Unfortunately, I can't start of the thread with my own because I don't have a camera at the moment, and my rig is not yet complete. I will post something soon though. For everyone else, Lets see what you use!

It currently all in pieces...

Pickups... getting potted by Dimarzio (nobody wants to see a Jem with nor strings, pickups, or pickguard on) and amp... currently working on it

acdc51502112 - March 23, 2008 11:52 PM (GMT)
dice it all with gas then light it up, people would want to see it then!

Devon8822 - March 24, 2008 12:39 AM (GMT)
I wouldn't :(

AndyPollow - April 19, 2008 05:32 PM (GMT)
i used to have a really nice ampeg half stack but i sold it when grunge was popular and i couldnt find any bands i wanted to play with. i was pissed. i just use a tiny bc rich amp with a digitech rp50 but distorted i only like mono, no reverb chorus... only pickup simulator and compression... cuz i like the articulate clarity you get with a simple tone and alot of effects without distortion.

neoshredder - April 19, 2008 05:39 PM (GMT)
Mesa Boogie Mark IV. Little too big. I wish I got a smaller amp so it wouldn't be such a pain to take places.

acdc51502112 - April 20, 2008 04:47 AM (GMT)
ya i find that with the big amps, you need to have bloody roadies!

I got a picture of my main axe! :D That will have to do for now...

By request, here's some pics of my Electra Westone flying V:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/27384332@N07/

I got it used in middle school for $100, amp included. It's mainly been in the basement collecting dust for 15 years or so since I got it.

It took me a couple of days to clean it up, get strings and strap buttons, etc. I used a moist cloth to get the dust and crap off of most of it, used a toothbrush on the neck and pickups. The contacts in the plug were corroded bad, but some wd 40 took care of that. The bottom shoulder strap hole was stripped, so I broke a toothpick off in the hole and then put the screw in. The bridge kept popping up so the guy at the guitar shop told me about the panel in the back. I took it off and tightened the screws on some springs and the bridge went back down. I polished it off gutter punk style with a light coat of pam vegetable oil cooking spray. If you look close the amp looks like it was kicked in once or twice but it sounds ok aside from the occasional cracking and popping.

It weighs a ton, but its solid and I like the sound. This beast makes my shoulder sore after playing for an hour or so. Maybe I need a better strap.

I don't know what model it is and I'm hoping somebody might be able to help me with that. From this page I can tell that it was made between roughly 1974 and 1984. http://www.rivercityamps.com/electra/flying.php

A few things I didn't get yet: It has a hole for a whammy bar that I need to replace. I also really need to get a cheap guitar tuner. I'll get that stuff this weekend. Till then I'll just have to learn to tune by ear and bend notes with my fingers. I figure it's probably best that I learn those skills anyway.

Devon8822 - June 6, 2008 07:21 PM (GMT)
Thats a sweet looking axe, and I tell you just from the parts and style, it was definitely not 70s, and I would be very skeptical on early 80s although it is possible.
Anyways, you really sound like you know what your doing with it! I wish you luck with you new (old) guitar. :)

CaptainD00M - June 10, 2008 09:01 PM (GMT)
Marshall JCM 800 reissue
Marshall 4x12 400watt cab, with jensen's.
Ibanez RGEX320 DDistortion and FRED PU'S
Epipone Lp Custom Plus with Duncan JB and 59
DOD 250 Preamp.
BOSS DS-1 (won last night in an auction \m/)
Dunlop 535Q wah
BOSS ME-50 (i think there may be something wrong with it, the delay settings shift randomly)

Course... the Marshall and the LP are getting sold... and the ME-50s probably going to a mate of mine on 'indefinite' loan seeing as i'm leaving the country.

I havent got any pictures of my rig but here it is.

-Guitars-
Ibanez SZ320
Hamer Vector [cherry sunburst flametop]

-Amp-
Peavey Rockmaster 120w tube head [3x 12ax7's, 4x 6L6's]
Laney 2x12" recto style cab with celestions

-Effects-
Korg AX3000G
2x ART 400 Series EQs

-Preamps-
Rocktron: Silver Dragon, Rampage and metal planet [I like messing around with different distortion tones]
DOD 250 Preamp
Boss SD-1
DigiTech Black 13 [mostly to goof around with]

-Accessories-
D'addario .9's with wound 3rd
Jazz III esque picks of any brand
Duncan Design pickups [I believe the Hamer has a jb/jazz based set, while the Ibby has a distortion/59 based set]
Planet waves cables
I also use a power surge protector [all people should], and ac adapters.

Devon8822 - June 12, 2008 11:21 PM (GMT)
LordThurisaz, 2 questions

Why wound 3rd??

Why power surge protector? Why is it necessary? is that for tube amps or SS and tube amps?

wound 3rds sound better to my ears in terms of playing chords or all across the neck. The octave placement is more accurate [such as on a piano], plus they stay in tune better. You may have to run the string through the nutslot 4-5 times so that it fits perfectly in though if the nut doesnt take well to it.

I use a surge protector basically just for extra plugins. Plus if the power went out, I guess it's meant to not screw everything up.

Hey guys, I got around to taking the camera out and taking some more pics. Here is my classical guitar. It is an Alvarez CY-118, sounds and plays beautifully.

Top row from left to right: my Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster (Vicky), my Gretsch 6120 Nashville (April), my Gibson Les Paul Custom (Amelia), and my heavily modified Ibanez RG (Glum)

Bottom row from left to right: my Gibson Dobro Hound Dog (Otis), my Martin D-15 (Mo'), and my Dean Heirloom resonator (Stinky)

….and on to my my latest addition acquired from an auction on ebay. It is a circa 1987-88 American made BC Rich ST-III. Stock and in well taken care of condition.

Here is a quick story behind this. I had a BC Rich ST-III just like this one(close to the same color) that I bought brand new back in 1987. For those that don't already know, the ST-III's were American made high quality production guitars. (This was several years before Bernie Rico sold the company and BC Rich's quality went down hill during the 90's). The bodies were made of alder, and they came stock with DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups and setup perfect right off the rack. It was my frst REAL guitar (meaning American made/non-budget) and I was totally in love with her! I played the hell out of her on stage and off. To make a very long and boring story short, she was stolen in 92 and I was heartbroken. So when I saw this out on ebay you bet your ass I was going to grab it. I had to have it and I needed to do whatever I could to make sure that NO ONE else got her!!!

Here she is....

Thats awesome LoQ, intense story, treat her well! and when you get her, tell us how she plays eh?

I love how you name your axes... I have been meaning to do the same, but I can't think of any worthy names.

Oh I have had her for a few months now, She plays awesome. I brought her out to a jam with some buddies this past Thursday and the bass player I was jamming with said it was as if my Ibanez and my Les Paul Custom had a love child. lol!!!

Here is an amusing story regarding my BC Rich. I took it to this guy to get it set up. He has a celebrity client list that is over a mile long. So when I went to pick it up, he wanted to make sure I was completely happy with it, so he asked that I plug into one of the amps and play on her for a bit. Well that is all well and good except that NUNO FUCKING BETTENCOURT had just walked in a couple of minutes earlier to have one of his guitars worked on, so I'm there with my buddy mumbling to him "How in the hell am I supposed to fucking play in front of Nuno Bettencourt?". Luckily the amp was in the next room, so I just turned it down real low!

The best advice I can give regarding naming your axes is to let them name themselves. The name is there you just have to notice it.

This is how I came across the names for my guitars...

My white Gibson LP Custom = Amelia

Amelia was the name of my cat when I was a kid. She was white with black spots. My Les Paul is White with black knobs. If my cat Amelia was to morph into a guitar she would have looked like my Les Paul

My Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster = Vicki

I won that strat in the "Guitar Center/97.1 FM Best Guitar Licks Contest" (Well technically I won the giftcard that I used to purchase the Strat ). Since I won her I consider it a Victory. "Victory" = "Victoria" = "Vicki" (I know that sounds cocky, but I assure you it isn't. I was just very happy and proud that day :) )

My Ibanez RG = Glum

It's just sad. It's gray and has all sorts of negative self-loathing stickers and decals on it.

My Gretsch 6120 Nashville = April

I got the extended two year service plan when I bought her at Sam Ash, so I needed a way to remember when it was I bought her so I knew when she needed to be brought in. I bought her in April of 2006 so April became her name ;)

My Dean metal body Heirloom resonator = Stinky

Simple she is brass and she fucking stinks up my clothes when the brass gets tarnished! :P

My Martin d-15 acoustic = Mo'

the most boring and unoriginal name of all. She's made of Mahogany so I named her Mo' (Yeah I know she should actually be named Ma', but I'm not naming a guitar "Ma").

My Gibson Dobro = Otis

He just looked like an Otis. B)

My BC Rich doesn't have a name yet. I was thinking of calling her Judy after the character in Hitchcock's Vertigo. Since my original intention was to get her completely refinished so she would 100% resemble my old BC Rich ST-III. Judy was the name of the woman in Vertigo that Jimmy Stewart was trying to make up to look exactly like his recently deceased love (get the similarity ;) ).

But times are now a bit tough and I really can't afford to get the guitar repainted right now. Besides Judy is my father's wife's name and it just seems kind of weird to have a guitar sharing the same name as my dad's wife. So I'm just going to wait until a name finds her. I'm in no hurry.

acdc51502112 - July 8, 2008 04:51 PM (GMT)
great story for each name and from the fact of your local guitar tech's celebrity client list, I'd guess you're in LA or around there :P.

Devon8822 - July 8, 2008 07:06 PM (GMT)
Even more intense... hahaha hilarious NUNO F&^%$%^ BETTENCOURT. My JEM is kinda crazy, I want maybe a supernatural or alienish name for it. I love the neon green and black mix.... so badass.

I only pretend to play jazz really.

I do a few jazz covers with my band such as Take 5, All Blues, Fly me to the moon etc. Nothing too challenging. My favorite Jazz guitarist is George Benson. I really want to get into it more, but find it difficult to find the time.

Do you play any jazz Devon?

Well I play some jazz with the school jazz band, actually have practice in 40 min.

Not regularly, but every once and a while I will rip out some jazz. I play lots of fusion though.
