well you can practice technique for hrs a day, metronome and scales, sweeps and legato, but in my experience, once i learn a song, its a lil harder cuz i have this false sense of speed.sure, its great to run thru scales at your fastest metronome speed.but the real test is when ya can play MUSIC up to the skill level of a recorded tune, then play it well within a live,or band context.

i've been doin the tech thing for a yr or so now.along with theory and i really haven't learned any songs in a while.

so this yr i wanna compress my theory aqnd technique portion of my practices into a more useful session.

so to get started i'm relearning songs i haven't played in yrs.

starting with---- the antichrist, die by the sword and the final command by SLAYER.

RUSH---2112 overture

and some ozzy,randy songs.

since i once knew them it won't take too long to get them back.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKIN ON?...

No Boundaries - Michael Angelo Batio ('cos I'm a whore for lots of notes at once)
For The Love Of God - Steve Vai (he's my favourite guitarist)
Various tunes from the Final Fantasy IX and Chrono Trigger soundtracks.

Not learning any 'songs' at the mo but trying to perfect Handel's 'Arrival of the Queen of Sheba'. I got it tabbed out but ain't spending nearly enough time on it.

Metallica - Don't Tread on Me, One, Harvester of Sorrow, and Enter Sandman. I get bored, and I have ADD. Go me.

I rarely have any certain songs that I like to work and and concentrate on, but rather many, many songs that I play every now and then and try to improve parts of them.

However, now I have two important projects going on: I have to learn Rondo Alla Turca for a concert (reading it from tablature), and I'm trying to learn Terra from the Final Fantasy IX soundtrack on a keyboard by ear. I've got the intro down, but I have barely any experience with really playing a keyboard, so I have problems with actually playing it.

I've decided to play Crazy Train for my college audition and i already know most of it. Just a few bits of the solo i gotta learn.
