Title: Practice??

How long would you guys say you practice for each day on average. Do you have a set number of hours that you try to fit in albeit at various times of the day. Maybe work/education commitments interfere so you can really only get longer periods of practice done at the weekends? Do you think you practice enough or too little and do you find it hard to get motivated sometimes?

Sometimes I play all day and sometimes I don't play for a couple days so its hard to say. I try to practice a couple hours everyday.

I play almost every day, probably for at least an hour. I could probably play more often.

I try to spend at least a short time (30 mins) with a structured practice, running scales/arpeggios, working on speed etc, and the rest of the time learning solos/songs or writing new stuff. Make time for the structured stuff though, as that's what really brings your playing to the next level.

Yay for college music courses :P

Well, saying that, at college I can usually fit in a few hours of widdling and jamming. Home is when I 'practice' best though. I haven't really been going out socially for a while either, so even on a bad day I do about 3 hours.

I'm pretty strict with my practicing. I usually do 5-8 hours a day. I do everything with a metronome and I practice every scale I can think of in every key I know. Then I'll go through all the chords I know. If I learn a new chord I try to learn how to play the same chord at least five different ways on the neck. For picking I like to take some of the tougher 3nps patterns and work on those. For legato I play scale pattens for as long as I can with just one hand. When I practice tapping, I'll take the notes of a chord I know and play them on one string, it's a good way to learn tapping and knowing where the notes of chords are on one string. I don't really practice sweep picking much(yeah I know I should), but when I do it's slowly and I take chord shapes and sweep them. After all that stuff is done, I'll turn on the radio and copy licks and chord progressions as best I can by ear.

that sounds like a great practice schedule.

i don't get to play everday cuz i work away from home.

but i hit it pretty good on the weekends.

i'm makin it a goal to be more focused.

sometimes i do theory stuff, then i feel i'm lacking in something else and i concentrate on that then i lose some of my theory/scale/mode workout.

then i jam on some songs o wrote tryin to come up with cool melodies to record and make them finished songs.

i need to try to do things more structured though.

4-5 hr a days on thurs-sun.

now i'm laid off so i9'm hittin it pretty hard now.

most of the time I'll just play about 2 hours a day after school, just doing sweeps and 3nps scales. some legato. it has worked for me!

I practice but with no strict routine, a lot of the time i play along wth song and improvise solos though when i do practice properly i make sure i'm not distracted so i can focus on the guitar, and as of yesterday i'm gonna spend a lot more time writing riffs.

I've gotten to the point where I don't "try" to practice anything. In the sense that I don't make myself practice anything that doesn't really inspire me. I just let my muse guide me. Sometimes i just jam, sometimes I work more on chords/harmony, sometimes on chops, sometimes I compose, sometimes nothing...sometimes only 15 minutes, sometimes an hour.

However when I have a specific goal (a gig, recording, etc...) then my practice sessions become longer and much more intense. Usually the first step is to get my chops back into shape :D
