Title: Marty Friedman
Description: Picking Hand
IbanezDaemon - December 8, 2008 09:21 PM (GMT)
Here's a clip of Marty Friedman. Anybody else think that he uses a very awkward position for his picking hand? I've thought this for a long time now. He still get's the job done brilliantly though.

I heard Friedman say about his picking hand somewhere that he places it in that position because he finds that if he paces it like most guitarists do then he always ends up muting the strings by mistake as he plays them.
IbanezDaemon - December 8, 2008 09:32 PM (GMT)
Yeah that's right Steve, I've heard that as well.
Acousolysis - December 8, 2008 09:35 PM (GMT)
Friedman's picking style is awesome. I just don't understand how he can do those fast runs like that.
Steve5513 - December 8, 2008 09:43 PM (GMT)
I would sacrifice a small goat to satan to have Friedman back in Megadeth.

LOL!!! I'd sacrifice a couple of flocks dude. I think he's living in Japan now playing pop type stuff with various artists.

You're right. I adore Friedman but I can't stand his J-rock influenced stuff nowadays.

His picking technique does look a bit strange, but then he is rather unorthodox.
Megadeth with him and Menza was definately the ultimate line up. The solos on Rust in Peace are awesome.

whatever gets the job done! many think my style is weird because I'll play heavy metal music with a thumb pick, I'll play over the fretboard unless I'm palm muting, I hunch way over so my chin is like a half a foot from the fretboard, I'll finger pluck power chords and double stops during slower passages, all of which has been brought to my attention not to long ago, but when people listen to me play, they don't know about all these weird things I do, they just like how it sounds, so if it gets the job done, it's fine by me man!

That's crazy that someone started a thread about this. Jut recently I began noticing my picking hand becoming very similar to Marty's. I'm almost positive this came out of my newly-found love for Megadeth over the last few months, and I've definitely found that picking like that really helps me play a lot of stuff much more efficiently, and yes, I am aware that that seems like a complete oxymoron. It's cool though, you should try it out!

I may get flamed for this but i think we should hold off on the goat sacrafincing... I mean Megadeth is not what it once was and even with Friedman back in the fold i dont see it getting back to the satircal and inteligent lyrics of Rust in Peace, Youthinasia and Count Down... let alone the awsome fretboard tour du force.
Plus I like the Chris Broderic has a job :P mans gotta eat... well ...and be able to afford Ibanez LACS 7 Strings with goddam BKPups...
IbanezDaemon - December 9, 2008 08:48 PM (GMT)
Yeah Broderick is a great player but I haven't heard any of his Megadeth material.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!
...Actually, you kind of have a point.
On second thought, i would sacrifice a small goat to change the timeline to make it so that Friedman never left Megadeth and they never made Risk and stuck with the heavy stuff. As opposed to sacrificing a goat to make him go back to it now.

Yeah I really enjoy Marty's playing, it's very unique. I think that Chris Poland was my favorite Megadeth guitarist though. Have any of you guys seen him play before? Talk about unorthodox technique!

I believe it's partly because of his injured fretting hand index finger - he can't curl it past some point, if I remember correctly. This forced him to play in a unique way.

While we're kinda on subject here... Jeff Young anybody? A little bland for Megadeth, but has anyone heard any of his own stuff?

Neither i think hes just filling in as live guitarist at the moment, though a mate of mine saw them just after he started and sait the 8 finger tapping solo's were in full force.
It may not be a guide to what he does now but listen to the albums he did with Jag Panzer, they are pretty sic.
Ed:
Steve how about you go down to a coss roads and ask to be the best guitarist in the world... i think thats more likley to happen... the Power that be deemed that Megadeth with Freidman was probably TOO good a line up
Peace
IbanezDaemon - December 10, 2008 12:36 PM (GMT)
Yeah I have his Jag Panzer material. Awesome stuff!

I liked 'So Far So Good So What'. In fact it was my fav Deth album for a long time. And I particularly like Jeff Youngs playing on 'Mary Jane'.
Haven't heard his solo stuff tho.

So Far, So Good... So What! was an awesome album, but there probably won't be anything as orgastic as Rust in Peace for Megadeth to come.

i still can't believe how awesome rust in peace is. Every song was awesome. It has to be the greatest thrash metal album ever.

Yes, yes... It IS the greatest thrash metal- and one of the very best albums ever.

Don't get me wrong, I love the balls off'a RIP, but personally, the first three Deth albums are my favorite. I'm a an of the heavy, fast, uber-thrash shit they were throwing out around this time. Marty's my favorite Megadeth guitarist and all, but I just didn't like them as much sonically. Oh man, but Youthanasia kicks some ass... as does Countdown To Extinction... and Rust in Peace... oh man, they all do.
Acousolysis - December 10, 2008 07:05 PM (GMT)
I liked the first four albums way more than anything after Rust in Peace. Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia are still great, but they are nowhere near the league of RIP.
Steve5513 - December 10, 2008 07:16 PM (GMT)
Rust in Peace is THE best metal album ever imo, after that i would put KIMB as my second fave, then probably Peace sells.
IanJ - December 11, 2008 06:08 AM (GMT)
Really? Nobody digs SFSGSW as much as I do? You guys just crazy. I mean, shit, listen to Set The World Afire... THAT is fucking epic. Wait a minute... this is the technique forum, and we've turned this into a Megadeth chat. Still... I dig it. OH HEY! My Jason Becker DVD just got in today... talk about... whatever you call that. God, I would guess. Some very nice live footage of him and Marty back in Marty's poodle hair days.
CaptainD00M - December 11, 2008 10:07 AM (GMT)
I motion this gets moved to the 'Other Music' thred.
IanJ - December 11, 2008 09:14 PM (GMT)
I second, third, fourth, and however many it would take for that to be taken into effect that.
