Title: Your Favorite?

So what scale do you like to use the most? I picked other for Lydian Dominant. Mostly because it has such a cool sound to it and you don't hear it used much :ph43r:

For me Harmonic minor. The darkest and most expressive of the scales. Closely followed by Phrygian dominant.

Most expressive you say? Why is that?

im lazy, i use aeolian mostly lol

Hurricane Kid - November 3, 2008 10:34 PM (GMT)
I went for Dorian as I like the sound of the Maj 6th over minor chords. I like the lydian dominant scale too Perp Burn as it's nice to use it in Jazz over Dom7 chords.

PerpetualBurn - November 3, 2008 10:40 PM (GMT)
Yeah man it's cool sounding scale....but I'm not entirely sure on what chords besides dom7 it works well with... Do you know any others that sound good with it?

Me too, i'm kind of stuck using it. I often find myself falling back into using it without realizing it.

Well I'm not sure about many other chord types other than dom7 that it will work with. I think its just dom7 or dom 7 extensions like 7/9#11 due to the scale tones.

Jazz is littered with dom7 type chords though so plenty of opportunities to use it in that context

EDIT:

Obviously you could use it over other chords that are within the same key i.e. B lydian dominant could be used over B7, C#7, D#m7b5,
E#(F)m7b5, F#m(maj7), G#m7 and Amaj7#5.

PerpetualBurn - November 3, 2008 10:52 PM (GMT)
Yeah that makes sense I forgot about 7/9#11 extension........very specific jazz is!

neoshredder - November 3, 2008 11:05 PM (GMT)
Harmonic minor owns all.

IbanezDaemon - November 4, 2008 08:45 AM (GMT)
Yeah Harmonic minor is the one. PB I just think that for me this scale allows me to get the sound and style I want across in the most expressive way I know. As the AC/DC song says 'Brings out the Devil in Me' lol. The other ones I use are Phrygian Dominant, Phrygian, Hungarian Gypsy and of course Aeolian. All pretty dark sounding scales. Melodic minor can sound dark when used over the right progression but I don't use it at all as it can sound Jazzy. Dorian I play sometimes as this can be very expressive but it also has a very bluesy sound to it as I'm sure you know. :)

Acousolysis - November 4, 2008 06:36 PM (GMT)
Other for Phrygian dominant.

5th mode of the harmonic minor scale. That mode rocks.

CaptainD00M - November 4, 2008 10:45 PM (GMT)
Miloxilydian is my favourite Maj... pity i couldnt vote for a min because then it would probably the the Phrigian mode from the Harmonic min... i cant for the life of me remember which one it is.

I like the Milox because of its easy melodic qualities... and because i grew up listning to 90's rock... blatant abuse of that mode.

Peace

im basically relearning modes, well at least how to play them in the standard major/minor.

Devon8822 - November 11, 2008 05:05 AM (GMT)
ermmm... sorry to break up the party but this doesn't really work...

You can play all these scales in all of these modes^ They are completely different things. Maybe we can reset the poll, to "favorite mode" or "favorite scale". I can make this change if you want?

IbanezDaemon - November 11, 2008 09:17 AM (GMT)
I think most people have chosen scales here except for CD so yeah good idea Devon.
