Title: extreme advanced guitar challenges
Devon8822 - October 26, 2008 08:31 PM (GMT)
This thread is for posting songs or riffs anything, that challenges any guitarists skills on the guitar. Pieces that work unique muscles in your fingers, and unique techniques. Pieces that any guitarist would struggle to master. Pease say which part of the song your talking about.
I will start...
17th Century Chicken Pickin' - Impellitteri (Pretty much the whole thing, but especially the intro)
This tune implements insane string skips, and blazing alternate picking... when I learnt it I feel that it improve my technique vastly.

Jason Becker - Serrana
The arpeggios. You guys know what I'm talking about.
...and at the tempo Becker played it live.

That's an amazing piece Devon. Was listening to it today actually. Definitely his best song.
My first entry is Paul Gilbert's 'Technical Difficulties'. Not the album version but the one he plays at the start of his Terrifying Guitar Trip instructional dvd. You can find it on youtube under the title Metal Dog. I love the rythym at the intro and the way he matches the drummer with that really quick lick. The solo is just an awesome full on shred affair.

Awesome one ID, to many people attempt this song, but cannot play it "properly", they play it messy without palm mute on the 5th string. It is a toughy, I think it also benefited my alternate picking greatly.
I am going to add another... Blitzkrieg by Yngwie Malmsteen... he economy picks this bad how.. its just ridiculous. However, I must add that I didn't benefit from learning it very much, nothing there other than speedy economy picking. You will benefit more playing slow scales, with economy picking. Its different than alternate because, economy picking slowly will advance your faster economy playing.

Agreed that's song has some sick guitar work on it.
My second one is Rob Marcello's Boss Gt8 demo on youtube especially the Harmonic minor passage from 4.47 to 5.47

Come on guys... join in before me and IbanezDaemon get them all...
Sea of Lies, end of solo... tapping arpeggios.
IbanezDaemon - October 26, 2008 09:03 PM (GMT)
The song Daydream by Vinnie Moore. Incredible! One of my all time faves. The whole damn thing is just awesome!!!
Devon8822 - October 26, 2008 09:17 PM (GMT)
VinMan's Morning Star intro
Acousolysis - October 26, 2008 09:34 PM (GMT)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xohcxxt6oHoThat and other tapping stuff by Chris Broderick. His 8-finger tapping is marvelous.

Nitro-Freight train
Fast solo with extremly fast arpeggios...Batio did it great.
Orzandotl - February 8, 2010 08:29 AM (GMT)

I can almost get the intro down (Though not as fast as Yngwie but still kind of fast) but i always screw up when the intro part gets down to like the 19th fret. That bit is hard.
I'm going to add... SPEED METAL SYMPHONY by Cacophony
:P
Good luck lol.

For the love of God is not that hard. You just gotta have a good sense of timing. Also know how to play odd times. I learned the beginning recently.
Acousolysis, Serrana arpeggios are pretty hard to me because I can't seem to get my sweeping clean. I think the tempo is about 140 and moderate tempo is usually 120. So once you get the sweeping down at 120 you should be able to do the tempo Jason does.
I think the Powers of Ten album is one album that is hard. Shawn is actually the fastest guitar player in the world. (not counting those guys who spend their life trying to reach 33 notes per second) So trying to imitate his work is hard. Thank god, he doesn't shred all the time.(which is one reason why I love his work)

LOL, not the beginning really, but the main solo parts..... :P
Orzandotl - February 9, 2010 03:09 AM (GMT)
Texas Nuclear Boogie - Impellitteri
DatM - February 10, 2010 03:09 AM (GMT)
TRying to learn just about any Holdsworth solo will make your hand fall off.
Adrian276 - March 8, 2010 03:56 PM (GMT)
Anything by Adam Fulara. His 2 hand tapping is extreme. His Bach interpretations are impossible B) . Id love to be able to play like that but im not even dreaming about getting to a day when i could barely think about it :P
Dont know why others (Broderick) get so much credit and not him (in the area of 2 hand tapping of course)
ilikeguitar - May 12, 2010 01:53 AM (GMT)
i think dragon's den- symphnoy X the arpeggios at then end are hard
ImitationSHREDder - July 10, 2010 07:41 AM (GMT)
Tornado of Souls Solo (the last few seconds are tricky for me).
Jason Becker- Perpetual Burn (i'm not even going to attempt to play this one till I've got at least two more years of playing under my belt).
Also Jeff Loomis- Miles of Machines
ARNphrygian - June 18, 2011 08:11 AM (GMT)
i think that the outro of "this godless endeavour" by nevermore (jeff loomis) is quite a sweep picking challenge!
another one could be speed metal symphony by cacophony

Yep some good choices there, excellent tracks.
Here's a good one by Theodore Ziras, some very quick stuff in this and amazing sweep picking;
