Title: Arpeggios!
Description: Post an arpeggio

Devon8822 - May 5, 2008 10:01 PM (GMT)
This is a thread for posting arpeggios, we guitarists can check the thread whenever we are bored or need something to learn or practice. Please keep the chatter to a minimum, every post MUST contain one arpeggio shape, and one arpeggio shape only. Please include the name, and theory behind the arpeggio for other members to learn it properly, state what note it starts on (root, 3rd, 5th, etc...). You don't HAVE to make it descending and ascending if you don't want to, ascending alone is fine.

I will start, with possibly the most common shape, it is an A Minor arpeggio starting on the 5th. It would be known as the second minor shape if you are familiar with all of the other shapes for this same arpeggio. I often like to throw in the root and 3 on the low E string as well as other notes (7th, 9th, but this is only triad arpeggio so...).

Arpeggio Definition taken from Wikipedia: "an arpeggio is a broken chord where the notes are played or sung in succession rather than simultaneously. The word, like many other musical terms, originates from Italian, in which it means "in the manner of the harp."

Oh and here is a link where you can find a template for your tabs, just copy and paste.

You gotta say the key  cus a lot of the time with complex arpeggios its hell to figure out what key it is. its A Major, starting on the 5th. would be second position major arp.

You can add the root and 3rd on the E string to make it full form too.

A basic Emaj triad ( E G# B ) sweep, but a very cool sounding one nonetheless with the bit of tapping in there.

Amin7, from a Frank Gambale Lesson. Not complicated, but great stretching exercise for those with smaller hands like me. :D
It should be A, C, E, G, A, C, E, G etc...

I'm doing it from memory so if i have tabed it wrong i'll fix it later tonight. 1, 3, 5,7 repeat format.

This is a diminished 7th arpeggio starting on the root note. there are a lot of ways to play this one, but this is my favorite shapes. I really like the diminished 7th because of it's dissonant, yet melodic sound. Another thing that's great about it is the fact that it's all minor 3rds, so it can be played with the same shape, every 3 frets. This particular one is a b diminished 7
This shape sounds really good with sextuplets, which is why I left out the 9 on the d string. Depending on what sound you're going for, you can pick all the notes or hammer on in places where there are 2 notes on one string.

Arpeggios with added ninths have a very classical sound to them. I think we all know what added 9ths are, but if someone doesn't, you add the 9th note, so it's the one above the octave.

It's several different arpeggios and it's from a song, but it sounds cool and is in the key of C#m.

Try the arpeggios to this chord progression.

Amin, Dmin, Gmaj, Cmaj, Fmaj, Dmin, E7, Amin

To avoid big stretches try starting the first A minor from the A note at the twelfth fret on the A string and take it from there. Sorry for the lack of tabs to this but it would have taken me ages. :(

Nice. Going up in the old difficulty rating stakes as well.

Clint Matthews - September 30, 2008 08:38 PM (GMT)
well, I'm still a little sketchy about what exactly a sweep arpeggio is, some say all strings in the arpeggio must be stricken with an up and down stroke, others say as long as it's in a sweeping motion it's a sweep arpeggio, I'm not sure, but I've always considered this to be a sweep arpeggio:

dude, im only 17 and i just now started taking music theory. i form my arpeggios by ear, you know what sounds cool, not by scales or modes or whatever it is.

if you like that one, heres one i did about a year ago. just please dont steal my ideas, learn them and then make your own out of them.

I've got about ten song/instrumentals on the go Steve, but I'm finding it hard to finish any of them at the moment. Once I've got a few of them finished the idea is to put up a myspace page with some stuff on. Always busy at work though so I don't have too much time - I'm a bit of a procrastinator too. Once its sorted I'll post up the link.

And thanks for the interest matey - You should try and get some more of your ideas down too - they sound promissing. Try to get access to a decent PC and recording software. With a bit of patience you'll be amazed what you can come out with.
