Title: Books

Who reads books? What types, genres etc of book do you read? What are you reading now?

I'm currently in the last 30 or so pages of Thomas Paines Age of Reason, after that I'm gonna read either Christopher Hitchens Biography of Thomas Jefferson or Thomas Paines Rights of man, either one, and then straight onto whichever one is left of the two. Then after that I'll probably go read Lord of the Rings and/or The Hobbit again, then possibly read one of the 5 or so books on samurai I never felt like reading in the almost 2 years I've had them.

I like history books (things on samurai, romans, greeks mainly but I'll learn about any history, those are just my main interests), fantasy books and books on religion. I don't like religion or religious ideas, but I find the topic interesting and like talking about it.

I can't limit my reading to genres, as I read pretty much anything depending on what I feel like.

I'm almost through reading Eva Hoffman's Lost in Translation: Life in a New Language, which I was supposed to read for an exam. I read some 30 pages before the exam, but decided to finish it anyway.

My favorite books are no doubt George Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm - though Mika Waltari's The Egyptian (I think that's the title in English) makes the top list as well. I still haven't gotten around to reading The Island by Aldous Huxley, which I should do soon.

Reading 'The Demolished Man' by Alfred Bester at the mo - supposed to be one of the best Sci Fi books ever written. It's pretty good so far.

LOTR and the Hobbit are probably my fave books, I've read those so many times. Looking forward to the Hobbit movie coming out if they ever get around to completing it!! I also like all books by Raymond E Feist and David Gemmell in this genre.

I read lots of history and science books. Used to have quite a good collection of occult/paranormal books too.

I used to read a lot of horror novels as well, just your standard Stephen King, Dean Koontz etc.

Gotta get back into reading a bit more. My concentration levels appear to have dwindled recently. I've picked up books on several occassions, read a few pages and totally forgot what I just read. Must be old age!!!! ;)

Happens to me sometimes. Only just started reading a week or so a go ( Had read LOTR and Hobbit a few years prior but that was all and only out of nothing else to do)

Although, with me it's generally only the last paragraph or so, have to go back and reread often to get it to sink in. I think it might be because I read a bit too fast.

Just finished the Age of Reason. 200 or so pages of Mr Paine pwning christianity, especially at the end of the second part where he replies to, and crushes, a couple of people who wrote him letters trying to refute him after the first part was released.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Furies-Calderon-Co...79718867&sr=8-1 Anyone read this or the series? Someone said it was pretty good, anyone have a second opinion? Anyone read Tolkiens work besides LOTR or the Hobbit, if so what did you think of them?

I read a ton in early high school, I mean I read hundreds of books a year.

My favorites are:

Lolita
Siddhartha
All Quiet on the Western Front
Catch-22
A Clockwork Orange
1984
Brave New World
Slaughter-House Five

and some others.

Lolita??? what?

Anyway i've been reading crime novels by a guy named Stephen James. They all have names of chess pieces "The Pawn" "The Rook"...etc. I love the stories, great plot and sometimes i think this guy is serial killer himself, he sure looks like one.

I've read alot of those young adult fantasy novels, but i don't really like any of them. I'll be an honest man and say that i've read the Twilight saga, they do not deserve the attention that they get.

The best books series i've read has got to be Harry Potter, nothing i've read has come close to captivating me as much as that series. My parents are very religious/intolerant of anything mentioning witchcraft, so one day i just downloaded the e-books, audio books and movies (fuck you, mom and dad). Then i finished read/listening/watching(up to HBP) everything in 2-3 weeks. I fully intend to buy the actual books when i begin living on my own. I've also read Fellowship of the ring and I'm planning on buying the other two shortly. British authors imo, are much better than American Writers.

It's not old age...it's internet. I am somewhat ADHD since I am a lot on internet nowadays. Used to read a lot, but can't easily concentrate anymore. I read a paragraph and then I feel like opening another window to check the news or something. I read real, not e- books, so of course that's not an option.
When I have a great book, it's much easier. One I recently read was The Long Walk (Stephen King).

Totally agree. I'm on the internet a lot as well but usually the same sites to be honest. I used to read heaps of books, something I would dearly love to do again. I actually had read 3/4 of The Devil Rides Out by Dennis Wheatley in a short space of time but left the book lying around and my dog Ozzy decided to rip it to shreds, ;) Oh well, have read that book a few times before anyway.

Yeah I don't read that much anymore. Outside of school, I was never much of a reader. Grades always motivated me though. lol

Just bought 2 books. Bios of Bach and Vivaldi.
http://www.amazon.com/Vivaldi-H-C-Robbins-...22985586&sr=1-1
http://www.amazon.com/Johann-Sebastian-Bac...22985605&sr=1-1

Let us know how they are. I like biographies but sometimes they can be a little dry. If not, I am interested too.
One of my favorite bios was "Is that it?" - Bob Geldof.
