Title: "Metal Languages"
Description: Ask yourselves

Muramasa - May 23, 2010 06:23 PM (GMT)

This is something I always wanted to know, I will aprecciate any answer.

Do people of english speaking countries listen only to metal bands which sing in english?

Iron Maiden, Malmsteen, ACDC, the Rolling Stones... Thousands of teenagers here hear these bands without knowing what are the lyrics talking about, as I did when I was a teenager, and still could enjoy it.

When I started translating lyrics some songs lost their intrest because of their bad lyrics (specially Iron Maiden's songs). I realized if some Maiden's songs had been written in spanish, maybe I've never liked it. At the same time, a good lyric makes a piece of mediocre music better.

If you don't understand the lyrics of an album, are you still intrested on listening to it?

(I like music wether if I understand the lyrics or not: the most famous bands would have been much smaller if people around the world decided not to listen what they can't understand)

yeah, in America, we listen to only English speaking music.
Mostly because pop music is in English not any other language.
As for metal, we only listen to English speaking bands.

I listen to music mostly because of the music not the lyrics, which is the main reason everyone listen to music. People don't go hey let's listen to the lyrics.

That's incorrect. The lyrics are just as much a part of the music as any other instrument: this is why I usually have to give records a listen-through many times before it really opens up to me.

The lyrics play an even bigger role when listening to Finnish music. Many Finnish songwriters are actually hailed as masters for not their musical talents but rather their lyrics. That said, though, the lyrics are just as important to me when listening to English stuff.

I always thought Iron Maidens lyrics were pretty damn cool.

Maybe it's just the translation?

I was answering his question for english country to listen for lyrics. (I'm from America)
I was talking in particular my generation.
Everyone always say I just listen to the beat not the lyrics.
If you're listening to Opera, of course you'll listen to the lyrics.

If truth be told all of my rock music is in English which is the Universal language if you like for this style and also for most popular music of today. Having said that I would listen to bands that do not have an English speaking vocalist no probs. If I like the song the actual lyrics would not be all important. I like a few Operas which are in either German or Italian, plus I listen to lots of Choral Classical music by Vivaldi, Bach etc none of which are in English so music sung in English is certainly not a pre-requisite for me.

This is very intresting...

From here, I can say that non-english speaking people is more intrested in listening to music with lyrics they can't understand. On the other hand, english speaking people mostly listen to english, but have less intrest on listening to music in other languages.

Then...
...if non english speaking countries would do the same, english bands would be less famous than they are now. If people had rejected the Maiden because they can't understand lyrics all around the world, they wouldn't be so popular and known, and the same with any band; english speaking bands would not be as popular as they are now, compared to non english speaking bands.

I have listened to many albums without understanding the lyrics, and still I enjoy it.
I think those who focuse only in english speaking bands, or only in bands whose songs they can understand, are missing a whole lot of good music. That's a pity...

Oh, my translations surely are no good, but Maiden spends too much time talking about demons and those old imaginery... I prefeer Metallica's lyrics, for exemple. Anyway lyrics are important to me only when I want them to be.

The real big problem about America is that they don't share music stations from around the World like other countries do. I miss out on a lot of new music.

I often look for bands I don't know in rapidshare or megaupload. For exemple, if I were intrested on corean rock, I'll just surf the web and get any band names; YT is useful too. But I don't know which laws are in your country...

From time to time I find things I like very much.

I agree with you 100% if you just have regular radio where im from there are two stations with anything close to metal. I never listen to the radio anyway so it dosent matter. Personally i believe Jason Becker deserves his own radio station. :P

IbanezDaemon - July 17, 2010 06:53 PM (GMT)
Yeah, Jason deserves so much more recognition. He is one of my fave players and I listen to his material all the time and have done for over 23 years now. I will at some point in the future be making a donation to Jason as I know things are tough for him financially. I've thought about commissioning an oil painting of him which I would send to him and he could auction off himself.
