I don't play an instrument (although my older brother played guitar and then took classical classes at USC a number of years ago), but I've always been interested in the bass guitar. Also being a fan of several rock/metal subgenres, I often run into a situation where the music I like the most, oftentimes almost mutes one of my favorite instruments.
Are there any big time Neo-Classical bass players? Does the bass player in Neo-Classical metal just play fast over-and-over again to provide the necessary rhythm for it's 6+ String counterpart to shred all over the place, or do they have opportunities to shine?
Stu Hamm and Billy Shehan are some good ones. Usually neo-classical guitars play bass on their albums.
I don't know any neo-classic specialized bass player, maybe other users in this forum will know any.
I suggest hearing as much as you can. If you like bass lines or solos, let's get the idea and imitate them. Anyway, bass and guitar are instruments, you can try to play like a guitar or a keyboard in some moments if you want. Just listen to every instrument to get some ideas.
Bass player Pepe Bao from a band named "Ofunkillo" is very good; plays very fast!
I played the bass in my first band (thought I was guitarist). You will play in more bands if you choose the bass, since there is lots of guitarists but no bass players.
Wally Voss ( Yngwie , Taffola ) .... I hear he was a great person and for sure a great bass player.
