Hi, Im Pranay, Im a Neo-Classical Guitar player, I play in the London based Symphonic Metal Band "Winters Eve". I am currently doing my Masters in Classical Composition and will start my Phd in September in Neo-Classical Metal. I am so glad to be a part of the forum as I will need your help in research and many other things. If I can ever be of any help to anyone please let me know, may that be your theory, technique or anything else(As long as its not about Jazz :D)
Thanks
Pranay

Man, you missing out on not liking Jazz. Those are the good stuff.
Classic jazz guys shred like Neo-classical metal guys.
Anyways, what research are you looking for?
Oh yeah, Welcome!

slashjames - April 27, 2010 07:35 PM (GMT)
Hey! right now I'm looking for a creditable source to reference the causes for the down fall of Neo-Classical Metal. In general if anyone has any links to any scholarly work on Neo Classical Metal or any articles that would be really really helpful as I can barely find any written material on this sub genre.
Thanks

As for Jazz its just not got the edge to it also I do not like atonality in music. Don't get me wrong I like old jazz, and even some jazz fusion but not stuff like Alan Holdsworth(like DNA we are all different :D).

If you look up some stuff on 90s grudge era, you might find some stuff on why it kinda died. Maybe encyclopedia.com will help.
check out Baker's Dictionary of Music too. It might have some information in there.

I'm guessing you like guys like Charlie Christian, Lenny Breau, Wes Montgomery, etc. but not George Harrison, Holdsworth ect.

The sad thing is, there's not much research to be found at all: neoclassical metal is pretty much an underground movement to never rise into fame outside the shredhead communities. The good thing is that neoclassical metal is pretty much classical music gone... well, metal! With most chords being power chords, that is.

I just can't let this one go: I find what you said quite funny, as our DNA is 94-98.5 percent the same!

Anyway, nice to have you on board, man. And I hope you enjoy your stay here!

I think he was talking about genes. Like how we all got genes that make us unique unless we have an exact clone.

I actually managed to compose a question already! Seeing you've probably studied classical composition thoroughly, did you have to study atonal composition (12 tone row, etc.) or composers in class? I'd love to study such things.

malikshreds - April 27, 2010 08:24 PM (GMT)
One composer who used it is Debussy.

I know (though I'm not really familiar with Debussy's work), but I was rather fascinated with the fact the OP didn't like atonal stuff.

Hey, I did study that a bit but thats the kind of stuff i avoided as I was more interested in using conventional forms(like sonatas, fugues) in Metal and stuff like counterpoint between Guitars, Bass and Keys and stuff on these lines. I think what you are looking for is Post Modernism, Serial-ism in music. I think for that you must look at composers like Igor Stravinsky, Debussy(Maybe not), Schoenberg, Ligiti (he is awesome!) and other composers that were say after the 2 wars in the 19th century. I have some books on it if you want I can give you some names.

Thanks, but I've been working on the subject on and off myself. I was more interested in your personal experience on studying it.

Oh yeah,
I forgot to tell you this. If want to know some stuff about neo-classical metal, talk to Jason Becker since he played a huge role in that genre though he retired from that music. He knew a lot of the guys from the 80s shred era. You can talk to him using his message board.
Just go to
http://jasonbeckerguitar.com/board/list.php?22

Do you know if there were any pipe organs during medieval times? I have to do report on medieval era and I decided to add one of my topics as music.

slashjames - April 27, 2010 08:59 PM (GMT)
Woo!! ur saying we can actually talk to THE Jason Becker? wow thats awesome!!! Thanks man!
As for pipe organs they are the oldest instruments in western music, I'm sure they have been there. I'm bad with names but there was one installed in Germany, Halberstadt in the 14th century(1350s or 60s).
