Title: Why do people always present opinion as fact?

Steve5513 - March 15, 2010 04:03 PM (GMT)
With pretty much anything that it's possible to have an opinion on, why do people always present their opinion as fact even when what they are talking about is subjective?

This could be with music, video games, movies... basically anything. This shit pisses me off so much.

As the saying goes, 'Opinions are like assholes...everybody's got one' and the people who present their opinions as fact are usually just that.............assholes!!! :D

It's because no one takes Logic anymore. (except me)
lolz.

It's a debate tactic. Show any weakness in your argument and people might not listen as well.

I see what you mean but I was thinking more along the lines of people who say shit like:

Consoles are better than PC

or

X Guitarist is better than Y guitarist

With both those things, there is no best, both are 100% subjective.

This.

If you're actually going to argue over it, it always comes after the "fact".

you could always just argue everything is subjective and their take on it is totally irrelevant to you. lol

Steve5513 - March 16, 2010 12:58 PM (GMT)
I could just put my fingers in both ears and yell "It's Subjective" over and over.

best solution ever

Acousolysis - March 17, 2010 11:21 AM (GMT)
Actually, debating over opinions is fun as hell. Besides, what is there to argue if not opinions?

Think of this way: a fact is a fact, therefore not questionable; however, opinions can be bested.

That is, if facts actually were completely factual, but most commoners don't realise that.

Steve5513 - March 17, 2010 12:06 PM (GMT)
I don't see much purpose in debating over an opinion in relation to things that are things like movies and video game-OH WAIT! I'M DEBATING AN OPINION NOW!

... Well done

:D

haha. I guess it's the "youtube" effect. Lolz

I always made myself the same question.
Maybe there is some reason of economy or of style in terms of writing: yes its somehow rude to present opinions as facts, but if you want to avoid it you must write connectors such as "In my opinion...", "I think...", "I would say that..." in the beggining of almost every sentence. That is rather tiring, and makes the text repetitive.
When talking with relatives you may not use them very much, but in the internet it can be a little rude not to use it (if people can't see your face, maybe they always imagine you with a serious face).

You are on the right track. In addition to presenting "facts" being a powerful tool for argumentation, in written language the basic assumption is that the receiver - or reader - is aware of the writer stating opinions, not facts. Therefore there is no need for the writer to note that it's just his opinion in the beginning of every sentence.

Guess I just spend too much time in the youtube comments :D

Well, the YouTube community is probably one of the worst on the internet.

malikshreds - May 1, 2010 03:59 PM (GMT)
Man you're right. They fight about everything.
Plus if you have proof, they'll be ignorant about it and try to invalidate your comment.

Steve5513 - May 1, 2010 11:48 PM (GMT)
What I most often see on YT is people who ignore someones point in an argument in favour of simply mocking the person or the way they framed their point instead of actually adressing the point itself.
