Title: Songs you're covering

malikshreds - February 26, 2010 04:47 PM (GMT)
Are you guys recently covering any songs right now?

I'm covering "For The Love Of God". I got the first two verses and the bridge down. I just can't figure out the time signature and metronome speed. I think it's 4/4.

The tempo is near 98 in 4/4.

Thanks. I knew it was 4/4 time because Steve was holding bends that were whole notes in 4/4.

Huh, that's weird. It's easier to just count the rhythmic pulse. Try following the drums instead of the other instruments.

Then again, sometimes there's all that progressiveness and it becomes difficult to follow any single instrument. You should just catch the basic pulse of the music.

malikshreds - February 26, 2010 06:51 PM (GMT)
In my theory class, I'm taught to listen to an instrument (piano) rhythmic pattern. That's why I just listen to the guitar. Usually you can tell if it's meter because sometimes the guitarists holds a note for a whole note.
I'll try your advice though.

Anyways, what song are you covering right now?

Hurricane Kid - February 27, 2010 12:22 PM (GMT)
I'm playing a gig with my covers band tonight so I'll be doing a lot of covers. No shred songs though - just pop and rock - I sold out years ago!

The set list is

Dream Catch Me - Newton Falkner
Somersault - Zero 7
Miss Sarajevo - U2
Strange Brew - Cream
Right Down The Line - Gerry Rafferty

Star Man - Bowie
Drive - Incubus
Bad Penny - Rory Gallagher
White Room - Cream
Little Wing - Hendrix
Corporeal Jigsore Quandary - Carcass
High and Dry - Radio Head
Purple Rain - Prince
Dakota - Stereophonics

I'm not sure, actually. I spend more time practicing smaller song sections that I find beneficial; only full songs that come to mind right now are a few Death songs and some fingerpicking pieces - mostly stuff by Nobuo Uematsu.

That's an interesting setlist.
Funny that you added a death metal song into that list.
I could imagine the crowds reaction.
If you have a video of the show, pm it to me.

Congrats on your popularity. You must have got a lot of fans to be sold out years ago.

Sorry Malik - the carcass song was not really in the set - just my idea of a joke.
The gig went ok although I made some cringe worthy mistakes!

For the love of god is a Great piece!

the solo is a little tricky, but with enough wah you can make it sound close ;)

I'm working on scarified!

Scarified? That is a great tune. Did you know it's that it's roughly based on a Bach Harpsichord piece?

malikshreds - March 28, 2010 08:03 PM (GMT)
ID, thanks for that info never knew about that. I haven't done much research on Paul than I did on Jason Becker.

i had to stop covering For The Love Of God because I'm working on a book with my teacher. I spending most of my focus on that book. I'm stuck on counting 4/4 while doing eighth notes.

Prima vista practise?

malikshreds - March 28, 2010 10:08 PM (GMT)
What?!

I've been practicing 8th notes for less than a week. Funny because I was recently having a problem with ties with quarter notes (I conquered it now). Lolz. I guess in two weeks I'll get it down.

What?!

Was just wondering if you were practising rhythm for sight reading purposes or something... That is exactly what I'm doing these days.

I'm practicing sight reading right now with my teacher. I already been doing sight reading since I'm doing Theory I. So yes. I'm practicing rhythm. It gets quite frustrating because it boring counting 4/4 in your head while playing. I like 3/4 better because it's faster.

As for Tay,

Quite an awesome piece. I really like it. Strangely, I've never heard it on the radio.

No worries Tay. It's good to hear from you again. You'd disappeared of the radar for a while there. ;)

has anyone here learned the first arp section in Jason becker's altitudes? I'm doing it turned down to C# right now, such an epic song.

Learned it a long time ago: it worked as one hell of a sweep practice.
