Title: If Jimi didn't die

malikshreds - September 18, 2009 02:05 PM (GMT)
You know if Hendrix didn't die, we wouldn't have neoclassical metal.
Because Yngwie thought the guitar was cool cuz of Hendrix.
Also Hendrix influenced Black Sabbath. So I can guess he influenced a little on Randy because I bet Ozzy prob talked about Hendrix to him.
Also I read Jason Becker liked him.

So funny thing is if Hendrix didn't OD, we prob wouldn't have neo classicasl metal as popular as it is today.

I do wonder what would happened if Jimi learned to play neo classical.

Tell me what you guys think.

I think Neo-classical metal guitar playing would still have happened as it was a natural progression of style and technique. It may have just happened in a slightly different way. Ritchie Blackmore, who influenced a lot of the neo-classical shredders was doing his thing whilst Hendrix was still alive.

Agree with HK. Classical music and indeed it's Baroque era have been influencing musicians for hundreds of years before Jimi Hendrix was even born so it was only a matter of time before someone came out with a classical/rock fusion.

Yeah i have to agree. But jimi still play a major role in all genres of metal.
Even tho he played more bluesy rock. But I cannot imagine if we didn't have a Yngwie or Satriani.

Your right that Hendrix was a huge influence on rock and metal music. And yeah his untimely death was a catalyst to some people to pick up the guitar.

Agreed. Almost every rock guitarist on the planet today has been influenced directly or indirectly by Jimi.

I think Neoclassical Metal would have happened either way, guitar was progressing so fast during the 80's players would have turned to classical music to further push the boundaries of sound and technique. But if Hendrix didn't die I'm sure he would have still influenced everyone almost the same. I've had many fantasies about what he would be doing if he was alive haha.

Mixing Hendrix and neoclassical is not very usual, LOL!

In my opinion, without Jimmy Hendrix, neoclassical metal would be different, of course. But not only neoclassical metal: all styles using electric guitars would be too, since whammy bars, wah pedals and other important guitar effects were strongly developed with his help. And, of course, his savage and new style wouldn't have given some ideas which became very appreciated by metal players.

If he were still alive... well, I don't think things would have been very different. He did his music. I heard that by the time he died he was thinking about changing his style and somehow frustrated with his work, but even if he had changed it, his former work would have remained just as it really happened.

You guys forget Yngwie wanted to play guitar after he saw the news reports of his death...if he didn't die we wouldn't have Rising Force.

TBH I think most of us shred fans on the board were probably aware of the influence Hendrix' death had on Yngwie. It had a similar effect on Satriani although he obviously isn't in the neoclassical vein.

I think malikshreds' initial post suggested that Hendrix's death influenced Yngwie.

IbanezDaemon - September 23, 2009 10:59 AM (GMT)
Yeah, Hendrix's death inspired Yngwie to 'start' playing guitar but after that he went in a completely different musical direction to that of Hendrix. For me Malmsteen may have drew inspiration from Hendrix's showmanship and use of feedback/distortion to begin with but for me he drew far more musical influences from Blackmore/Deep Purple/Rainbow as well as the Classical Composers of the Baroque era and Paganini.

Steve5513 - September 23, 2009 11:45 AM (GMT)
I don't think Jimi had much influence on Malmsteen from a playing standpoint at all.

Actually I have disagree from you. Before Yngwie started playing neoclassical, he played blues. So you know he got that from Hendrix. I'm sure he got into classical music cuz everyone in his house were musicians like pianist, violinist etc.

Yngwie has stated that he began playing guitar because of Hendrix, so I'd say that makes more than up for it.

Yes but that was because of his death, Yngwie saw a news report and that got him more interested in guitar than he was previously. Yngwie hasn't ever said Hendrix influence was musical.
